A group of leading scientists at the UK’s prestigious Imperial College of London has dropped a bombshell study confirming that ivermectin has been proven to treat certain forms of epilepsy.
Existing retrospective cohort studies, measured in 1991–1993 in the western African nation of Cameroon, uncovered an association between Onchocerca volvulus microfilariae load in childhood.
A follow-up study in 2017 also uncovered a risk of developing epilepsy later in life.
The current study, published in the peer-reviewed Nature Journal, was led by Professors Jacob Stapley and Maria-Gloria Basáñez at the Imperial College of London.
The research team analyzed children aged 3–15 years for Simulium damnosum sensu lato-transmitted onchocerciasis.
They used high-tech EPIONCHO-IBM simulation models to simulate 19 years (1998–2017) of annual ivermectin mass drug administration (MDA) reflecting coverage in the study area, while also modeling epilepsy prevalence and incidence.
Scenario-based simulations of 25 years of (annual and biannual) MDA in hyper- and holoendemic settings, with 65% and 80% therapeutic coverage, were also conducted.
Using the stochastic transmission model, EPIONCHO-IBM, the scientists predicted 7.6% epilepsy prevalence (compared to 8.2% in the Cameroon study) and an incidence of 317 cases/100,000 person-years (compared to 350).
Onchocerciasis also known as river blindness, is a parasitic disease caused by the microscopic worm Onchocerca volvulus.
It’s transmitted to humans through the bites of infected black flies (genus Simulium) that breed in fast-flowing rivers and streams near fertile land.
As reported by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), ivermectin remains the treatment of choice for onchocerciasis.
The drug has been shown to reduce the occurrence of blindness and to reduce the occurrence and severity of skin symptoms.
Without killing adult worms, Ivermectin kills the microfilariae.
Ivermectin is the drug used in the Mectizan program.
For discovering ivermectin two scientists earned the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 2015.
Ivermectin is considered the second-greatest medical discovery in history after penicillin.
The authors found that when analyzing the results in hyperendemic areas, 25 years of biannual MDA (80% coverage) eliminated onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy (OAE) and protected untreated under-fives from its development.
Strengthening onchocerciasis programs, implementing alternative strategies, and evaluating treatment for under-fives and school-age children are crucial to prevent OAE in highly-endemic settings, cite the London-based public health scientists.
This discovery comes as ivermectin continues to stun the scientific community.

Ivermectin, a drug derived from a soil microbe, was found to be incredibly effective in treating Covid patients, however.
The miracle drug has been found to treat far more serious illnesses than Covid, however.

Another study revealed that ivermectin can help prevent neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis.
Additionally, ivermectin has been found to treat injuries caused by Covid mRNA shots.
Dr. Mary Talley Bowden revealed that, in her own clinical practice, ivermectin has offered profound results in treating vaccine injuries.

Renowned oncology surgeon Dr. Kathleen Ruddy also recently made the bombshell announcement that she has successfully cured several cancer patients using ivermectin, as Slay News reported.
Amazingly, she revealed that every terminally ill patient who tried ivermectin made a full recovery that left doctors stunned.
Dr. Ruddy revealed that the so-called “horse dewormer” has stunned doctors by triggering dramatic recoveries in those suffering late-stage cancer.
Ruddy said the drug was tried on three patients who had exhausted all other cancer treatments.
She revealed that the patients went from their deathbeds to making a full recovery and being completely cancer-free in under a year after taking ivermectin.
She said all of the other patients had been told there was nothing more that could be and they all made amazing recoveries after taking ivermectin.
She noted that the probably of the patients recovering coincidentally while taking ivermectin was “zero”
“It’s like winning the lottery on the first three tickets you ever buy,” she explained.
